About AMR

Lossy

Adaptive Multi-Rate

Voice recording format

AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is a speech codec designed for mobile phone calls. Many phones and voice recorders save calls and voice notes as AMR.

Strengths
Tiny files for speech.
Limitations
Phone-call sound quality that is unsuitable for music, and poor support on computers.

About OGG

Lossy

Ogg Vorbis

The open alternative to MP3

OGG files usually contain Vorbis audio, a free and patent-free lossy codec. It is common in video games, on Android and in open-source software.

Strengths
Better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate, and completely royalty-free.
Limitations
Not supported by the iPhone Music app and by many car stereos.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert AMR to OGG?

Add your AMR files to the converter above. OGG is already selected as the output, so conversion starts right away. When a file is ready, click Download, or use Download all to get a ZIP.

Will converting AMR to OGG reduce the sound quality?

Both formats are lossy, so re-encoding adds a little loss. Choose a bitrate equal to or higher than the original (for example 192–256 kbps) and the difference will be inaudible.

Which settings should I use for OGG?

160–192 kbps sounds transparent for most music, and 96–128 kbps is fine for speech. Vorbis handles low bitrates better than MP3.

Are my AMR files uploaded anywhere?

No. The AMR to OGG conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so even private recordings stay on your device.

Can I convert several AMR files to OGG at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files; they are converted one after another, and you can download each OGG file separately or all of them together as a ZIP archive.
