Frequently asked questions

Which regex flavor does this tester use?

It uses your browser's JavaScript (ECMAScript) engine, including named groups (?<name>…), lookbehind and Unicode property escapes (\p and \P). Most patterns also work the same way in Python, Java, PHP and .NET, but details can differ.

What happens if my pattern is too slow?

Patterns run in a background worker. If one takes longer than two seconds, for example because of catastrophic backtracking like (a+)+$, it is stopped and the page stays responsive.

How do I use capture groups in the replacement?

Write $1, $2 and so on for numbered groups, $<name> for named groups and $& for the whole match. To insert a literal dollar sign, write $$.
