Frequently asked questions

What is a Unix timestamp?

It is the number of seconds since 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC, also called epoch time. Many systems count milliseconds instead, for example JavaScript's Date.now(); some databases and logs use microseconds or nanoseconds.

How does the tool know whether my number is in seconds or milliseconds?

Detect automatically looks at the number of digits: up to 11 digits are read as seconds, 12–14 as milliseconds, 15–17 as microseconds and longer numbers as nanoseconds. If the guess is wrong, choose the unit yourself.

Which time zone is used?

Results are shown both in your device's time zone and in UTC. A typed date without a time zone is read in your time zone, unless you tick the UTC option.
