About MP4

Video

MPEG-4 Part 14

Video with a soundtrack

MP4 is the most common video format, and its soundtrack is usually AAC. Converting it to an audio format keeps only the sound and drops the picture.

Strengths
Lets you keep the music, speech, lecture or podcast from a video.
Limitations
The picture is discarded: the result contains audio only.

About MP3

Lossy

MPEG-1 Audio Layer III

The universal audio format

MP3 is the most widely supported compressed audio format. It removes sounds the ear barely notices, shrinking music to about a tenth of its CD size.

Strengths
Plays on virtually every device, app and car stereo. Small files with good quality at 192–320 kbps.
Limitations
Lossy: some detail is lost with every encode. Less efficient than AAC or Opus at low bitrates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to MP3?

Add your MP4 files to the converter above. MP3 is already selected as the output, so conversion starts right away. When a file is ready, click Download, or use Download all to get a ZIP.

Will converting MP4 to MP3 reduce the sound quality?

The soundtrack of the MP4 video is decoded and saved as MP3. With the default settings it sounds the same as in the video; only the picture is left out.

Which settings should I use for MP3?

For music, 192 kbps is a good balance and 320 kbps is the highest MP3 quality. For speech and podcasts, 96–128 kbps in mono is enough. Leave the sample rate as the original.

Are my MP4 files uploaded anywhere?

No. The MP4 to MP3 conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so even private recordings stay on your device.

Can I convert several MP4 files to MP3 at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files; they are converted one after another, and you can download each MP3 file separately or all of them together as a ZIP archive.
