Frequently asked questions

What is Base64 used for?

Base64 turns binary data into plain ASCII text, so it can travel through systems that only handle text: email attachments, data: URLs in HTML and CSS, JSON payloads, HTTP Basic authentication headers and JSON Web Tokens.

What is the difference between Base64 and Base64URL?

Base64URL replaces + with - and / with _ and usually drops the = padding, so the result can be used in URLs and file names without escaping. The decoder accepts both forms automatically.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it. Never use it to hide passwords or secrets.
