About APE

Lossless

Monkey's Audio

Monkey's Audio lossless format

APE (Monkey's Audio) is a lossless format that compresses slightly better than FLAC. It is popular for CD rips in some music communities.

Strengths
Lossless, with excellent compression.
Limitations
Slow to decode, and barely supported by phones, car stereos and most players.

About MP3

Lossy

MPEG-1 Audio Layer III

The universal audio format

MP3 is the most widely supported compressed audio format. It removes sounds the ear barely notices, shrinking music to about a tenth of its CD size.

Strengths
Plays on virtually every device, app and car stereo. Small files with good quality at 192–320 kbps.
Limitations
Lossy: some detail is lost with every encode. Less efficient than AAC or Opus at low bitrates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert APE to MP3?

Add your APE files to the converter above. MP3 is already selected as the output, so conversion starts right away. When a file is ready, click Download, or use Download all to get a ZIP.

Will converting APE to MP3 reduce the sound quality?

MP3 is a lossy format, so some inaudible detail is discarded to make the file much smaller. At 192 kbps or more, hardly anyone can hear the difference. Keep your APE original if you want a perfect archive.

Which settings should I use for MP3?

For music, 192 kbps is a good balance and 320 kbps is the highest MP3 quality. For speech and podcasts, 96–128 kbps in mono is enough. Leave the sample rate as the original.

Are my APE files uploaded anywhere?

No. The APE to MP3 conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so even private recordings stay on your device.

Can I convert several APE files to MP3 at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files; they are converted one after another, and you can download each MP3 file separately or all of them together as a ZIP archive.
