MPEG-4 Audio
Apple's everyday music format
M4A is an MPEG-4 audio file, usually containing AAC. It is the standard format of Apple Music, iTunes and the iPhone Voice Memos app.
iPhone Ringtone
The iPhone ringtone format
M4R is an M4A (AAC) file with a different extension, which iPhones recognize as a ringtone or alert tone. iOS accepts ringtones of up to 40 seconds.
Audio is converted by ffmpeg running inside your browser. Your files never reach a server.
Queue up to 50 files and download them one by one or together as a ZIP.
Set the bitrate, bit depth, sample rate and channels — or simply keep the sensible defaults.
Add your M4A files to the converter above. M4R is already selected as the output, so conversion starts right away. When a file is ready, click Download, or use Download all to get a ZIP.
The audio is encoded as AAC at 256 kbps, which sounds excellent through a phone speaker. Only the first 40 seconds are kept, unless you turn that option off.
The defaults (AAC at 256 kbps, first 40 seconds) are ideal. Then connect your iPhone to a computer and drag the file into Finder or iTunes, or share it to GarageBand on the phone and export it as a ringtone.
