About WMA

Lossy

Windows Media Audio

Microsoft's legacy audio format

WMA (Windows Media Audio) comes from the Windows Media Player era. Many older music libraries and Windows recordings still use it.

Strengths
Small files with decent quality.
Limitations
Poor support on iPhone, Mac, Android and in modern apps — converting to MP3 or M4A fixes that.

About WAV

Lossless

Waveform Audio File Format

Uncompressed studio audio

WAV stores raw PCM audio exactly as it was recorded, without compression. It is the standard working format of audio editors, music production software and broadcasting.

Strengths
Perfect quality, instant to decode, and accepted by all editing software.
Limitations
Very large files (about 10 MB per minute at CD quality) and limited support for tags.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert WMA to WAV?

Add your WMA files to the converter above. WAV is already selected as the output, so conversion starts right away. When a file is ready, click Download, or use Download all to get a ZIP.

Will converting WMA to WAV reduce the sound quality?

Nothing more is lost: WAV stores the decoded WMA audio exactly. It cannot restore detail that the WMA compression already removed, though — the file gets bigger, not better. Convert to WAV when software requires it or for editing.

Which settings should I use for WAV?

16-bit is CD quality and works everywhere. Pick 24-bit only for high-resolution sources or if you will keep editing the audio. Keep the original sample rate unless a program requires 44.1 or 48 kHz.

Are my WMA files uploaded anywhere?

No. The WMA to WAV conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so even private recordings stay on your device.

Can I convert several WMA files to WAV at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files; they are converted one after another, and you can download each WAV file separately or all of them together as a ZIP archive.
