About AAC

Lossy

Advanced Audio Coding

Efficient successor to MP3

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) was designed to replace MP3 and is used by YouTube, Apple and digital radio. An .aac file is a raw AAC stream without an MP4 container.

Strengths
Better sound than MP3 at the same bitrate, and broadly supported.
Limitations
Raw .aac files cannot hold cover art and seek less precisely than M4A.

About M4A

Lossy

MPEG-4 Audio

Apple's everyday music format

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio file, usually containing AAC. It is the standard format of Apple Music, iTunes and the iPhone Voice Memos app.

Strengths
Better quality than MP3 at the same size, with full support on Apple devices, Android and modern browsers.
Limitations
Some older players and car stereos only understand MP3.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert AAC to M4A?

Add your AAC files to the converter above. M4A is already selected as the output, so conversion starts right away. When a file is ready, click Download, or use Download all to get a ZIP.

Will converting AAC to M4A reduce the sound quality?

Both formats are lossy, so re-encoding adds a little loss. Choose a bitrate equal to or higher than the original (for example 192–256 kbps) and the difference will be inaudible.

Which settings should I use for M4A?

AAC at 192 kbps sounds as good as MP3 at 256 kbps. Use 256 kbps for Apple Music quality, or 96–128 kbps for audiobooks and podcasts.

Are my AAC files uploaded anywhere?

No. The AAC to M4A conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so even private recordings stay on your device.

Can I convert several AAC files to M4A at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files; they are converted one after another, and you can download each M4A file separately or all of them together as a ZIP archive.
