About MP4

Video

MPEG-4 Part 14

Video with a soundtrack

MP4 is the most common video format, and its soundtrack is usually AAC. Converting it to an audio format keeps only the sound and drops the picture.

Strengths
Lets you keep the music, speech, lecture or podcast from a video.
Limitations
The picture is discarded: the result contains audio only.

About WAV

Lossless

Waveform Audio File Format

Uncompressed studio audio

WAV stores raw PCM audio exactly as it was recorded, without compression. It is the standard working format of audio editors, music production software and broadcasting.

Strengths
Perfect quality, instant to decode, and accepted by all editing software.
Limitations
Very large files (about 10 MB per minute at CD quality) and limited support for tags.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to WAV?

Add your MP4 files to the converter above. WAV is already selected as the output, so conversion starts right away. When a file is ready, click Download, or use Download all to get a ZIP.

Will converting MP4 to WAV reduce the sound quality?

The soundtrack of the MP4 video is decoded and saved as WAV. With the default settings it sounds the same as in the video; only the picture is left out.

Which settings should I use for WAV?

16-bit is CD quality and works everywhere. Pick 24-bit only for high-resolution sources or if you will keep editing the audio. Keep the original sample rate unless a program requires 44.1 or 48 kHz.

Are my MP4 files uploaded anywhere?

No. The MP4 to WAV conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so even private recordings stay on your device.

Can I convert several MP4 files to WAV at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files; they are converted one after another, and you can download each WAV file separately or all of them together as a ZIP archive.
