About MP4

Video

MPEG-4 Part 14

Video with a soundtrack

MP4 is the most common video format, and its soundtrack is usually AAC. Converting it to an audio format keeps only the sound and drops the picture.

Strengths
Lets you keep the music, speech, lecture or podcast from a video.
Limitations
The picture is discarded: the result contains audio only.

About M4R

Lossy

iPhone Ringtone

The iPhone ringtone format

M4R is an M4A (AAC) file with a different extension, which iPhones recognize as a ringtone or alert tone. iOS accepts ringtones of up to 40 seconds.

Strengths
The native ringtone format of the iPhone: small files with good quality.
Limitations
Only useful as a ringtone, and anything longer than 40 seconds is rejected by iOS.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to M4R?

Add your MP4 files to the converter above. M4R is already selected as the output, so conversion starts right away. When a file is ready, click Download, or use Download all to get a ZIP.

Will converting MP4 to M4R reduce the sound quality?

The soundtrack of the MP4 video is decoded and saved as M4R. With the default settings it sounds the same as in the video; only the picture is left out.

Which settings should I use for M4R?

The defaults (AAC at 256 kbps, first 40 seconds) are ideal. Then connect your iPhone to a computer and drag the file into Finder or iTunes, or share it to GarageBand on the phone and export it as a ringtone.

Are my MP4 files uploaded anywhere?

No. The MP4 to M4R conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so even private recordings stay on your device.

Can I convert several MP4 files to M4R at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files; they are converted one after another, and you can download each M4R file separately or all of them together as a ZIP archive.
