About MP4

Video

MPEG-4 Part 14

Video with a soundtrack

MP4 is the most common video format, and its soundtrack is usually AAC. Converting it to an audio format keeps only the sound and drops the picture.

Strengths
Lets you keep the music, speech, lecture or podcast from a video.
Limitations
The picture is discarded: the result contains audio only.

About M4A

Lossy

MPEG-4 Audio

Apple's everyday music format

Limitations
Some older players and car stereos only understand MP3.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to M4A?

Add your MP4 files to the converter above. M4A is already selected as the output, so conversion starts right away. When a file is ready, click Download, or use Download all to get a ZIP.

Will converting MP4 to M4A reduce the sound quality?

The soundtrack of the MP4 video is decoded and saved as M4A. With the default settings it sounds the same as in the video; only the picture is left out.

Which settings should I use for M4A?

AAC at 192 kbps sounds as good as MP3 at 256 kbps. Use 256 kbps for Apple Music quality, or 96–128 kbps for audiobooks and podcasts.

Are my MP4 files uploaded anywhere?

No. The MP4 to M4A conversion runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files are never sent to a server, so even private recordings stay on your device.

Can I convert several MP4 files to M4A at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files; they are converted one after another, and you can download each M4A file separately or all of them together as a ZIP archive.
